I’m sorry that I forgot to post something. It just slipped my mind. I was trying to come up with something to write today, and landed on a little quandary.
In my edits of The Worth of a Stone, the book that I am seeking an agent for, There were two small but pervasive things. The first is Ogres and the second is the Dinah. In my story, the ogres live under bridges and work as toll masters. Which is typically the work of trolls in folklore. When I gave the story to readers, some of them bounced on that change. I liked the difference as I think ogre is more interesting than troll, a word that has modern connotations. But I changed, because if it makes things easier for the reader, so be it.
The other is Dinah. In my mind the character’s name is pronounced Dee-nah, but everyone will read it like Die-nah like in the song. I had thought to change to Dina, but then a friend stood their ground and told me leave Dinah be. Does it matter if I say a name different than my readers? Probably not.
Oh well, editing continues, but now with an eye towards flexibility.
